A website for your business in Germany – in German for your customers, in Ukrainian or Russian for you
If you have registered a Gewerbe in Germany, your business needs two things: a Google Maps profile so people nearby can find you, and a website that meets German requirements – with an Impressum and a Datenschutzerklärung. Setting up the Google profile costs €390, a simple website from €1,490, and the timeline ranges from a few days to six weeks. We discuss everything in Ukrainian or Russian, and you get the website in proper German for your customers.
What a website in Germany must have
In Germany, a business website is more than design. Some elements are required by law, and missing them is a common reason for an Abmahnung (a formal warning demanding that you pay the lawyer's costs).
- Impressum. Full name, address, email, phone or another quick way to get in touch. Required by § 5 DDG. Applies even to a one-page website.
- Datenschutzerklärung. An explanation of what data the website collects and where it is sent: enquiry form, analytics, fonts, maps.
- Cookie banner – only if the website uses cookies that are not technically necessary (for example, advertising analytics). A website without such cookies needs no banner – and that is often the better solution.
- VAT note. If you are a Kleinunternehmer, the sentence “Kein Ausweis der Umsatzsteuer gemäß § 19 UStG” must appear next to your prices.
You need an Impressum not only on your website. A business page on Instagram or Facebook must also link to an Impressum – this is often forgotten.
This is a practical checklist I use to review every website, not legal advice. In complicated cases, you should consult a lawyer.
Example on this website: Impressum · Datenschutzerklärung
Google Maps – the best place to start
Most customers look for services on Google Maps: “Nagelstudio in der Nähe”, “Friseur Bonn”. A free Google Business Profile often brings more enquiries than a website, especially at the start.
What matters when setting it up:
- the right category – it affects search more than the description does;
- a list of services in German, in exactly the words customers search for;
- real photos instead of pictures from the internet;
- opening hours that match reality;
- the first reviews – they are what brings the profile into the top three with the map.
Who this page is for
- Beauty: manicure, cosmetics, hair salons, hair removal, brows and lashes.
- Renovation and services: interior finishing, electrics, cleaning, removals.
- Anyone who has just registered a Gewerbe and doesn't know where to start online.
I know the beauty industry from the inside: for eight years I ran my own online shop for professional equipment for hairdressers, beauticians and nail technicians, and took it into Google's top 5 myself.
